Fish Oil found to reduce the risk of death more than statin drugs

In April 2005 a paper was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine reviewed the effects of various fat lowering agents and heart disease. This data was pulled from 97 different clinical trials comparing cardiac death rates from the various methods used to treat high cholesterol. Mortality data involving 137,000 patients using different cholesterol lowering drugs vs mortality records from 139,000 patients who were not being treated for high cholesterol. The treatments used where cholesterol lowering statin drugs, high dose niacin, fish oil, and dietary change.

The researchers found that the greatest benefit was obtained from fish oil which provided an overall 23% reduction in the risk of death. Conversely the costly statin drugs only provided a 13% reduction. When the risk of death from heart disease alone was examined, Fish Oil lowered death rates by 32% compared to only 22% from statin drugs.

So simple fish oil was more effective at reducing the overall risk of death from all non-accidental causes of death, and in particular from heart disease. Fish oil achieved these remarkable results even though it had almost no effect on cholesterol levels. This is further proof that heart disease is not caused by cholesterol.

Fish oil demonstrated no side effects as compared to the statin drugs which can cause organ damage, muscle pain, and congestive heart failure.

So before you run out and pick up a bottle of the lowest priced fish oil you can find, some fish oil products have their own dangers. The fish oil I use and recommend (manufactured by Usana Health Sciences) is guaranteed to be free of all possible contaminants like mercury, dioxin, and PCB. This fish oil is sourced from small, young, cold water fish like sardines. These small fish have not spent years in the ocean so they have accumulated little of these dangerous contaminants. Then it goes through a double molecular distillation process to insure that it is nothing but pure fish oil.

Most commercial fish oils are sourced from the organs of larger fish which are caught for their meat like tuna, shark, cod, etc. these fish are many years old and have accumulated much higher lives of mercury, dioxin, and PCB in their tissues. Several years ago the state of California brought a suite against six companies for not identifying that their products didn’t company with the states Prop 65 restrictions against high levels of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer or birth defects. These companies were:

  • CVS Pharmacy Inc
  • Rite Aid Corp
  • General Nutrition Corp. (GNC)
  • NOW Health Group Inc.;
  • Omega Protein Inc.;
  • Pharmavite LLC (Nature Made brand);
  • Solgar Inc.
  • Twinlab Corp.

As you can see these are some major brands.

So do get some fish oil daily, but make sure it is from a safe source. For more information on the USANA BiOmega which I used please contact me.

Laser Hair Removal and Tattoos

We have seen many clients who have tattoos and want the hair removed from that area. Unfortunately laser hair removal lasers will damage tattoos. The dark pigment in the ink will absorb the laser’s energy and will heat up damaging the ink as well as the skin around it. The only solution is electrolysis.

If you’re thinking of getting a tattoo it would be wise to consider getting laser hair removal in that area first, then after the treatments are complete, then have the tattoo done.

How do I prepare for a Laser Hair Removal treatment?

There seem to be may misconceptions about what the preparation is for Laser Hair Removal treatments. Below is the preferred protocol:

Clients scheduled for hair removal should avoid electrolysis, tweezing, depilatories, or waxing for several weeks prior to treatments. If possible, don’t shave the day of the treatment; this will let the technician see the growth area. The technician will shave the area prior to treatment. Your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried, removing any makeup, cream, deodorant, or oils on the skins surface for treatment. What we need is to have the hair in the follicle so it can absorb the laser’s energy. I you pluck or wax, the hair won’t be in the follicle and the laser will be useless. Also, unlike waxing, you don’t need any hair growth. The hair can be flush with the skin. So shaving between treatments is preferred. You should also avoid tanning in the weeks prior to treatment. If you are out in the sun, keep the area to be treated covered and/or use SPF25+ sun block.

If you have had a history of cold sores (perioral herpes) and are scheduled for facial hair treatment, prophylactic antiviral therapy may be prescribed. The key to stress here is that if you have EVER had cold sores, then let then you’ll need to take the antiviral therapy for several days before each treatment, otherwise you may experience an outbreak of cold sores.

Resveratrol shown to have heart-protective benefits.

The Results of a randomized trial published online on April 19, 2012 in The American Journal of Cardiology reveal a benefit for resveratrol in reducing cardiovascular disease risk factors in men

and women taking statin drugs. “We have carried out the longest human trial reported thus far using a resveratrol-containing product,” announce researchers Juan Carlos Espín, PhD and his associates at CEBAS-CSIC and Morales Meseguer University Hospital in Murcia, Spain.

Dr Espin’s team divided 74 participants who were at high risk of cardiovascular disease to receive a grape extract containing 8 milligrams resveratrol, a grape supplement without resveratrol or a placebo daily for six months, followed by a six month period during which the dose of the treatments was doubled. Blood samples collected at the beginning of the study and at six and twelve months were analyzed for clotting factors, markers of inflammation and other values.

While the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 increased and the anti-inflammatory molecule interleukin-10 had decreased by the end of the study in the placebo group, no changes were observed among those who received grape extract without resveratrol. Subjects who received resveratrol experienced a 1.3 milligram per liter average decrease in high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as well as a decline in tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) by the end of twelve months, indicating a significant decrease in inflammation. Additionally, plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1) was reduced, reflecting a reduction in the risk of excessive blood clotting, while adiponectin and interleukin 10 were increased in the group that received grape extract with resveratrol.

“In the present study, we describe for the first time that a dietary intervention with a specific grape nutraceutical containing resveratrol 8 milligrams significantly improved the inflammatory and fibrinolytic status of patients undergoing primary prevention of cardiovascular disease,” the authors write. “This resveratrol-rich grape supplement seemed to exert a statin-like effect beyond patients’ standard medication. In this regard, a synergistic effect between statins and this grape nutraceutical cannot be ruled out.”

“Our results show for the first time that a dietary intervention with grape resveratrol could complement the gold standard therapy in the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease,” they conclude.

Resveratrol has been found to inhibit the proliferation of a variety of human cancer cell lines, including those from breast, prostate, stomach, colon, pancreatic, and thyroid cancers.

Resveratrol is found in red wine and is credited for being the source of the “French Paradox” where the French eat a very fatty rich diet, but they have very low incidence of heart disease – the daily drinking of red wine is credited for that very beneficial effect.

Red wines contain between 0.3mg and 1.30mg of Resveratrol per 5 ounce glass. So the 8mg dose they used in the study above would equate to drinking bottle or two of red wine daily. The supplement I take has 15mg of resveratrol (and I take 2 per day, so 30mg) so my daily intake of resveratrol equals probably 8-10 bottles of red wine per day. So all the benefit without the hangover or destroying my liver!

So enjoy a glass of red wine for your heart and better yet, add some resveratrol to your supplement regime.

How broccoli, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables help prevent cancer

Eat your veggies to prevent cancerHow broccoli, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables help prevent cancer

The few paragraphs below are from the UPI, but there is a mountain of evidence from multiple studies which show without a doubt that these vegetables and prevent and stop cancer.

From United Press International 04-20-12

Cruciferous vegetables — broccoli, cabbage, leafy greens, cauliflower — help prevent breast and prostate cancer, U.S. researchers say.

Researchers at Vanderbilt University’s Ingram Center showed a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables — specifically the indoles they contain — protects and improves breast cellular health.

“Indoles are organic compounds that have a positive impact on cellular health. One in particular, diindolylmethane has been shown to support the immune system and help keep hormones in balance, particularly estrogen,” the researchers said. “In the body, estrogen gets broken down into a variety of metabolites, some of which promote healthy cells. Unfortunately, others can cause problems. Diindolylmethane has been shown to help the body produce beneficial estrogen metabolites with anti-oxidative effects.”

Certain estrogen metabolites, which have been associated with obesity, chemical exposure and other causes, have been shown to derail cellular healthy, but diindolylmethane has proven to increase the good kind of hormone metabolites and decrease the kind that can challenge health, the study said.

Breast, prostate and other areas of hormone-related cellular health depend on this delicate balance, the study said.

Copyright United Press International 2012

In Dr. David Servan-Schreibers book “Anti-Cancer, a new way of life” he goes into depth on how many different vegetables, berries, and herbs have been proven to prevent, slow, and stop cancer. He has summarized the effectiveness of many different vegetables against colon, brain (which suffered from), lung, prostate, and breast cancer.

I all cases broccoli, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables were at the tops of the charts, though consistently outdone by garlic and leeks. Other powerful proven cancer fighting foods are green tea, olive oil, soy, turmeric, mushrooms, berries (Black, rasp, straw, blue, etc), stone fruits (peaches, plums and nectarines), and an assortment of spices and herbs.

Some vegetables can actually stimulate different cancers, so chose your veggies carefully. jalapeño peppers and tomatoes can stimulate colon cancer. Radishes brain cancer, add cucumber to the proceeding to stimulate lung cancer, eggplant and bock choy plus some others for breast cancer, and so on.

These foods aren’t powerful cancer killing agents that can instantly cure stage 4 cancers, but if eaten consistently while you are symptom free (you almost always have cancer cells growing in your body) your body can hold cancer at bay when it is just a few dozen or hundred cells, and eventually your immune system gets rid of it. So it isn’t that you never have cancer, but it never develops into anything and you just live peacefully with it. It is when it gets out of control that you are in trouble.

In those cases where you do have diagnosed cancer, which has been growing for probably 15-10+ years, these foods eaten several times a day, every day, can help to slow or stop the tumors growth, and in some cases turn it back.

So what can you and I do? ideally you blend up a garlic, broccoli, cabbage, soy, turmeric, mushroom, blue berry, peach shake seasoned with a pinch of everything in the spice rack. If you could stomach it it would be ideal. Dr. Servan-Schreiber does tell a story of a colleague of his who did this while he was doing his research and it did slow and stop his pancreas cancer.

The other option, which do, is take a very high quality and potent multi-vitamin which, like what I take, has extracts of olive oil, green tea, blue berries, broccoli, turmeric, etc in each tablet. So I take four a day, spread throughout the day, so I get some daily help, then I eat a diet very high in these foods, but it isn’t practical for most people to eat all of these fresh at every meal.

Why do laser clinics need medical directors in Colorado and other states?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure. Even though where you go for laser hair removal looks like a spa, there must be a medical director who oversees the operations. He/she doesn’t need to be on site, but must be within 30 minutes of the clinic. The reason for this is your safety. Should you get burned, laser flash in the eyes, etc. We need to get you medical attention promptly.

Even though you will probably never see the medical director, you should ask the clinic who their medical director is AND call that doctors office and have them confirm that they are indeed supervising that clinic and are they within 30 minutes.  We know of competitors who have lost their medical director and operated without one. Now why would a clinic’s medical director drop a laser clinic? Often because they don’t feel comfortable with the clinics operations, technicians, etc.  So if the clinic your using doesn’t have a medical director, then you should drop them too.

Also confirm where the doctor lives and where the office is. We know of one MD who was the medical director for several clinics in the northern Denver/Boulder area but his office was south of Colorado Springs and lived in South Denver – both far more than 30 minutes away.

So you may be wondering if you should go to a dermatologists office where you know the MD is on site. Well yes you could. You’ll find that their prices will be double of a clinic like ours. You’ll also find that the technician doing your laser hair removal treatments isn’t an MD or a nurse, but just a trained technician like us.  Medical schools and nursing schools don’t teach anything about laser hair removal, so they have to learn the equipment and protocols just like anyone else.

So who is our medical director? He is Dr. Michael Iannotti. His practice is about 4.4 miles from us here in Broomfield. He lives six miles north of us. He is not only our medical director but also a personal friend. You can find that he lists us as a clinic who he is the medical director for on his web site.

Want more beautiful skin? Then get out and exercise!

It’s hardly news that exercise is great for your heart, lungs, and mental outlook. Here’s another reason to get moving: Regular exercise is one of the keys to healthy skin.

People tend to focus on the cardiovascular benefits of physical activity, and those are important. But anything that promotes healthy circulation also helps keep your skin healthy and vibrant.

If you have dermatological conditions such as acne, rosacea, or psoriasis, you may need to take special care to keep your skin protected while exercising. But don’t let skin problems prevent you from being active. Here’s why.

By increasing blood flow, exercise helps nourish skin cells and keep them vital. Blood carries oxygen and nutrients to working cells throughout the body, including the skin . In addition to providing oxygen, blood flow also helps carry away waste products and toxins, including free radicals, from working cells. Contrary to some claims, exercise doesn’t detoxify the skin. The job of neutralizing toxins belongs mostly to the liver. By increasing blood flow, a bout of exercise helps flush cellular debris out of the system – it is cleansing your skin from the inside.

Exercise has also been shown to ease stress. By decreasing stress, some conditions that can be exacerbated by stress can show some improvement. Conditions that can improve when stress is reduced include acne and eczema. Although researchers are still investigating the link between stress and skin, studies show that the sebaceous glands, which produce oil in the skin, are influenced by stress hormones.

Regular exercise helps tone muscles, of course. That doesn’t have a direct affect on skin, dermatologists say. But firmer muscles definitely help you look better overall.

The Healthy Skin Workout

For all its many benefits, however, exercise can pose risks to your skin. Fortunately, protecting your skin is easy.

The main danger if you exercise outdoors is sun exposure. Sunburns increase skin cancer risk and can rapidly age the skin, erasing any benefits your skin might get from exercise. The key is to make sure you have optimal levels of vitamin D in your system. I you exercise in the winter outside in the northern hemisphere, then you won’t receive enough of the UVB rays to produce vitamin D, so put on the sunscreen otherwise the UBA rays, which cause cancer and age the skin will still make it through. In the summer though, put sunscreen on your face, but let your skin absorb the beneficial UVB rays on your legs, arms, and torso.

Don’t count of sunscreen alone to protect you, however. Sweating can remove the sunscreen that athletes put on and there is evidence that sweating actually increases the chance of burning. After athletes sweat, it takes 40% less UVA rays to burn than when they are not sweating.

Another skin problem that can arise during activity is chafing, which can cause rashes. For people prone to acne, the irritation and increased perspiration caused by tight-fitting workout clothes may lead to a form of acne aptly called acne mechanica. The two keys to prevention are to wear moisture-wicking clothing, such as bras and hats, to keep skin drier and cooler and to shower immediately after exercising. Wearing loose-fitting workout clothes can also help. Make sure your skin is clean before you work out to prevent clogged pores that lead to acne. Avoid wearing makeup when you exercise. After showering, apply a soothing skin moisturizer or powder to help prevent skin irritation.

Rx for Exercise-Related Skin Problems

Several other skin conditions can be exacerbated by physical activity, including rosacea, eczema, and psoriasis. That’s no reason not to exercise. The benefits of exercise outweigh any temporary problems it can cause. And there are simple strategies to prevent flare-ups when you work out.

For rosacea sufferers, increased body temperature and the skin flushing that accompany exercise can cause flare-ups. The best strategy, dermatologists say, is to exercise in a cool environment. One of the best choices is swimming, since the water keeps skin cool even when you build up body temperature. Brisk walking in an air-conditioned mall or waiting until the cool of the evening to jog outside are other good options. If you do get flushed and overheated while exercising, apply cool compresses to problem areas of the skin immediately after your workout.

Eczema or psoriasis sufferers can also experience flare-ups after strenuous activity, usually caused by salt from perspiration. Apply a moisturizer before a workout to provide protection from sweat. Be especially careful to moisturize your arms and legs and areas with skin creases, such as underarms and groin. If possible, exercise in a cool environment to reduce perspiration and the need for showering after exercise. Washing too often can cause dryness and exacerbate eczema and psoriasis.

Physical activity can definitely pose a challenge, but in the long run it will pay off with a toned, better looking body, and more radiant skin.

We recommend the USANA Sense skin care products.  The Daytime Protective Emulsion contains both UVA and UVB at SPF-15.  The Night Renewal Creme is a powerful restorative product which will heal and nourish any sun damaged skin cells.  Please contact us for more informaion.

Ever wonder what CoQ10 is good for? How about your heart!

I had a friend ask this question a while back, so here a recent research just out showing the benefits of CoQ10 or Coenzyme Q10 supplementation lowering interleukin-6 and providing antioxidant benefits in coronary artery disease patients.

Inflammation plays a role in the development of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the Western world. While coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation can benefit the heart, few studies have investigated its role in protecting against inflammation in heart disease patients.

In a trial described in an article published on February 16, 2012 in the journal Nutrition, researchers at Chung Shan Medical University in Taiwan compared the effects of twelve weeks of supplementation with 60 or 150 milligrams per day of CoQ10, or a placebo in 40 men and women with coronary artery disease. Plasma CoQ10 levels, markers of inflammation including high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), interleukin-6 and homocysteine; malondialdehyde (a marker of lipid peroxidation) and levels of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) were measured before and after the treatment period.

At the beginning of the study, having a higher CoQ10 level was associated with a lower level of interleukin-6 and C-reactive protein. By the end of the treatment period, plasma coenzyme Q10 levels increased in both groups that received the supplement. Among those who received the higher dose, interleukin-6 levels decreased by 14 percent and malondialdehyde levels were significantly lower by the end of the trial compared to baseline levels. Both groups that received CoQ10 experienced greater SOD activity. A non-significant reduction in hs-CRP values was observed in association with CoQ10 supplementation.

“Cell culture experiments have demonstrated that coenzyme Q10 can moderate the anti-inflammatory effects of antioxidant activities and by nuclear factor-kappa beta1–dependent gene expression,” they write. “In the present study, coenzyme Q10 supplements at a dose of 150 milligrams showed a significant antioxidization effect in decreasing the malondialdehyde level and slightly increasing SOD activities after 12 weeks of intervention.”

“Coenzyme Q10 supplementation at a dosage of 150 milligrams appears to decrease the inflammatory marker interleukin-6 in patients with coronary artery disease,” the authors conclude. “Long-term studies are needed to establish the beneficial effects of higher-dosage coenzyme Q10 supplementation on inflammation in patients with coronary artery disease.”
(Above from LEF.org)

CoQ10 is especially if you’ve been prescribed statins to lower cholesterol. Statin drugs lower cholesterol by poisoning the metabolic pathway which produces cholesterol and in the process the bodies normal production of CoQ10 along with sex hormones are also poisoned. You’ll hear the warnings that if you take statins to watch out for muscle pain, this is because with lowered levels of CoQ10 you’re muscles can’t produced the energy they should. More dangerous than aching legs is what the reduced levels of CoQ10 do to your most powerful muscle, your heart. when the heart can’t pump enough blood due to reduced CoQ10 blood and fluids begin to back up in your lungs and the result is congestive heart failure. So if you are taking statins you must also supplement with CoQ10. Since statin drugs were introduced there has been a huge rise in deaths from congestive heart failure – but their cholesterol is lower.

Athletes will also burn up a lot of CoQ10 during strenuous workouts so they also should supplement to replace what they use up and many will also use CoQ10 to improve performance.

As usual, if you do take CoQ10 supplements make sure you use a reputable company who manufacture to certified pharmaceutical manufacturing procedures. I’ve personally visited a number of supplement manufactures as well as pharmaceutical drug manufacture and the quality control in many is woefully lacking. There are very few companies you can truly trust to consistently provide exactly what is listed on the label and nothing else.
